Before you can get in the driving seat and start learning to drive, you will need a valid provisional driving license. The minimum age to drive a category B car not exceeding 3500kg is 17 or 16 if you are currently getting Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate (mobility component). You may apply for your license 3 months prior to your seventeenth birthday, which will make it possible to have a driving lesson on the day. Applications mat be made online, in person or by post, please remember to check you have fully complied with the identity documents and photograph criteria. The current fee for a first provisional license is £50, but it’s worth checking as they go up frequently. Licenses are issued by the DVLA (driver and vehicle licensing authority) and they aim to deliver yours within three weeks of receiving the application, it may take longer if your personal or health details need checking. If your license is lost or stolen report it immediately to the DVLA a replacement can be issued at a cost of £17.50. You will need to produce both parts of your driving license to the examiner on test day.  Book driving lessons in Morden with Blakes Driving Schools Morden on 08456 44 81 44

Your provisional license has arrived in the post and you have your first ever driving lesson. What can you expect? Some people find the first lesson a little nerve racking, its nothing to worry about your Blakes Driving Instructor will pick you up from the place of your choice. After the introductions you will be pleased to find that we only have happy, cheerful and friendly instructors and should feel a little more relaxed now. If you have never driven before your ADI will drive to a suitable training area nearby where you can swap seats and start to learn about the controls of the car. We normally recommend a one and a half or two hour lesson for the first time, this will give you lots of time to practice with the foot pedals, steering wheel and gears. Most people are surprised how well they can control the car on the first lesson moving away and stopping several times and all without stalling the engine! At the end of the lesson there will be time to ask your instructor any questions you have and talk over how the lesson went. Of course now you can’t wait till the next lesson so it’s advisable to book it now, this way you can be sure to get the day and time you want. The cockpit drill is an important part of safe driving, by carrying it out properly you will make sure that the car is right for you and you are able to reach the controls comfortably. To help us remember the cockpit drill we can use the letters DSSSM. D – Stands for doors, it’s not a good idea to drive away with them open so we need to check that they are closed properly. S – Stands for seat, to reach the controls the seat will need to be adjusted. Some cars you can move the seat up and down as well as back and forward, you should be able to reach all the controls comfortable without stretching. S – Stands for seatbelt, most of us have been passengers before and worn a seatbelt but it is important to wear it correctly. S – Stands for steering, the steering column of most modern cars will adjust to a position to suit the driver by pulling lever. Always ensure the lever is secured after adjustment and never move it whilst driving. The last letter M – Stands for mirrors, you will be looking in all your mirrors during your lessons so it is vital that you get the best view from them. Your instructor will help you get the adjusted correctly with the use of some pictures if needed. During your initial lesson you will find out about the foot controls of the car, where they are, what they do and how to use them. An easy way to remember them is ABC, A- Accelerator we refer to it as the gas pedal it’s so much easier to say! Basically the gas pedal makes the car go, it’s located on far right and is used by the right foot. We must be quite gentle with the gas pedal and we do this by placing the ball of the foot on the centre of the pedal and gently pressing down the depth of a one pound coin. The pedal in the middle is the B- Brake this makes the car slow down or stop, the right foot also works the brake pedal as we don’t need to go and stop at the same time! The pedal to the left is the C-Clutch this is the one most new drivers have difficulty getting to grips with, you don’t need an in depth knowledge of the clutch but by understanding the basics will help you understand when and how to use it. Your driving instructor will explain with the use of diagrams if needed that the basic workings of the clutch is to separate the wheels form the engine so we can change gear and stop without stalling or turning off the engine. Driving automatic cars is becoming very popular and the demand for automatic driving lessons is getting higher as time goes by. There are a number of reasons for this not least the fact people are able to reach test standard faster with fewer lessons, saving tine and money! Car manufacturers now offer a wide selection of new automatic vehicles and good quality used ones can be easily found in popular classified car magazines so the choice now much better than years ago. Some people may find the coordination required to drive a manual car too much to cope with and often swap over to automatic lessons after giving it a try. The main difference is automatic cars only have 2 pedals, a brake to slow or stop the car and a gas pedal to make it go. Usually the right foot controls both pedals as they never need to be used at the same time, it can take a little time to get used to not having a clutch if you have driven a car with manual gears and a good idea to tuck your left foot out of the way. As the name ‘automatic’ suggests when the car is placed into drive the best gear for the job will be selected by the transmission. With so many driving schools and instructors how do you choose which one to learn to drive with? When people enquire about driving lessons the first question they normally ask is about the price, whilst this should be considered it is important to make sure your lessons are giving you value for money.  Watch out for limited special offers that give cheap driving lessons for the first few, you might save £20 in the beginning but end up paying a higher price for the rest! Do you have to pay more for evening and weekend lessons? Blakes try to keep all lesson prices as low as possible and are proud that there is no extra to pay for evenings or weekends. It is very important to remember from the beginning it’s your money and up to you how you spend it, be prepared to change instructors if you are not happy of feel uncomfortable you wouldn’t have the same sandwich every week if you didn’t like it! At the end of the lesson evaluate and ensure you have learnt something this is the reason you are paying for driving lessons at the end of the day. A good professional driving instructor will give structured training to suit your level of experience and tailored to meet your individual needs. Throughout your driving lessons you will hear about the Mirror Signal Manoeuvre (MSM) routine. It is an important part of safe driving and often refereed to as the Golden rule. To make the routine easy to remember we can break it down into MSPSL, M-Mirrors: look into the mirrors to check the speed and position of the traffic behind. S-Signal: Consider giving a signal in good time to warn other road users of your intention to change speed or direction. Good time means allowing them enough time to react as well as seeing the signal. M-Manoeuvre: This is the act of changing speed or direction and can be split into 3. PSL, P-Position: Make sure you are in the right position in good time this will give a signal to other road users of your intentions. S-Speed: Ensure you are travelling at the right speed for the road conditions and the manoeuvre, select the best gear for the speed and match gears to speed not the other way round. L-Look: The look part can also be divided into three parts L-Look: All around at the available information. A-Access: make an assessment of your options on what you can see. D-Decide: make a decision which will usually be wait or go. The MSM routine should always be used before moving away or stopping, turning, signalling, changing lanes or direction, overtaking, slowing down or stopping. To pass the DSA driving test you must be able to recognise and deal safely with pedestrian crossings. There are various types of crossing including: Zebra crossings identified by the black and white stripes on the road and amber beacons on the black and white striped poles. They have zigzag markings on both sides of the crossing and a give way line approximately one yard from the crossing which tells drivers where to stop. Pelican crossings are controlled by traffic lights, pedestrians push a button located on a post close to the side of the road and the lights will change sequence to allow them to cross. A flashing amber light is used at pelican crossings to inform drivers that they must allow any pedestrians to finish crossing but may proceed if the crossing is clear. Puffin crossings are intelligent traffic light controlled. A sensor detects when pedestrians are crossing and holds the traffic light on red until they have reached the pavement. Toucan crossings are shared crossings for pedestrians and cyclists and can be identified by a red and green cyclist alongside the red and green man. Pegasus crossings are for the use of equestrians, usually alongside those for cyclists and pedestrians. A push button is sometimes provided much higher and further back from the road than normal making its use easier on horseback.  Book driving lessons in Wallington SM6 with Blakes Driving Schools Wallington learn to drive and pass your test call 08456 44 81 44

An important part of safe driving is being able to manoeuvre your vehicle confidently; this may be needed to turn the vehicle around or park and include using reverse gear. To pass the DSA driving test you must be able to perform these exercises accurately and under full control taking effective observation. Before starting ask yourself the following questions: Is this a safe place? Will it inconvenience anyone for example by blocking a driveway? Is it legal? It would not be within the law to perform a turn in the road on a one way street or reverse into a major road from a minor one. Reversing the car is not a difficult skill to master, start by practising in a straight line then go on to steering around corners. The rear window becomes your windscreen when travelling in reverse, turn and look over left shoulder, between the two front seats. This may be easier or more comfortable if you turn slightly in the seat but remember to keep your feet firmly placed on the foot pedals. If you find this difficult it is acceptable to hold the steering wheel at the twelve o’clock position with your right hand and place your left arm on or behind the passenger seat. Seat belts may be removed to perform reversing exercises, but make sure you put it back on before moving away. Manoeuvring exercises: Reversing into a side road on the left. For the purpose of your driving test the driving test examiner will get you to pull up at the kerb just before a road on the left. Make sure you apply the MSM routine before coming to a stop. Here you will get instructed to pull up just passed the road and reverse into it a reasonable distance. Remember that any signal you give must not be put on too early and risk confusing other road users. Only apply it once you have passed the centre of the road you are going to reverse into. Ideally you will position the car approximately two to three car lengths from the junction and be about a drain covers width from the kerb to start the manoeuvre. This may differ according to road layout or markings. To start most manoeuvres including moving away from the side of the road we can use the POM routine. Prepare- Get the car ready to go, in gear, gas set and at the biting point. Observe – look all around including in your blind spots. Manoeuvre- Carry out the exercise making sure that car is under control at all times. It can be difficult to know when to turn the steering wheel so you stay reasonably close to the kerb. Your driving instructor will give you hints and tips to help judge your position and get it right from the start. With so many driving schools to choose from how do you decide? Some quote pass rates, others offer ultra cheap lessons so how do you tell them apart? Firstly it is difficult to check any pass rates quoted and it’s not always a reliable method of finding the perfect instructor. Some pupils only have a couple of lessons then get an ADI to take them for a test another pupil may drive great during lessons but fail because of nerves which has little to with the tuition. Cheap lessons! Well we all like a bargain but you will need more poor quality lessons than a structured driving course to suit your own needs. That £1 per lesson saving could cost a lot more id you need extra driving lessons. If you call Blakes Driving School we will advise you to take a trail lesson with no pressure to book another, this is to make sure you like and get on well with the instructor, if you don't and want another please just ask! It is important that you feel comfortable in your lessons this way you will enjoy learning to drive and pass quicker. Next is make sure you learn something every lesson, that is why you are paying for professional driving lessons, we can practise with family and friends, a good instructor will teach the full DSA syllabus and give you honest feedback. Many people ask the question: Do I have to pass the theory test before I can learn to drive? The answer is No. As long as you have a valid provisional driving licence you can begin learning to drive. We recommend that you study for the theory test as soon as you start driving lessons, this way you will be putting into practice what you are reading. You will also have the opportunity to ask and get your instructor to explain any questions you find difficult. The cost of the theory test has recently gone up from £30 to £31 for all tests booked after the end of March 2009. The test is divided into two parts a 50 multiple choice questions followed by a 14 hazard perception video clips. To be successful you must pass both parts. The two local test centres to Blakes Driving School are located in Kinston & Croydon Surrey. There are many good publications that will help you to prepare for the tests including CD’s which enable you to take mock exams and give you a progress report.
