News London Mayor Boris Johnson is considering making changes to the rates of the congestion charge, depending on the time of day motorists enter the zone. One new scheme being investigated would abolish the current system and replace it with one similar to one which was introduced in Stockholm and would do away with the fixed daily cost. Instead motorists would pay more to enter during peak times and less that the current £8 at other times. Other options being looked at are electronic chips fitted to the vehicle, which detect entry into the zone and doing away with the need for the driver to make payment. Boris Johnson has always voiced his opposition to the congestion charge, which was implemented by his predecessor Ken Livingstone and already scrapped the introduction of the Western zone expansion due next year.
