Watch out for those puddles
2008-09-16

Michelle Kelly aged 31 from Manchester, failed her driving test recently after splashing a pedestrain by driving through a puddle. The mother-of-two protested that if she had swerved to avoid the puddle she might have caused an accident. She was told by the examiner that her actions constituted a traffic offence, it was also reported in the news that the DSA shared this veiw.

We should all remember that as safe drivers we have a responsibility to show consideration for other road users. The Road Traffic Act contains an offence of "careless, and inconsiderate, driving"  which includes driving through a puddle causing pedestrians to be splashed. The penalty for this offence includes a fine of up to £2500 so be warned!

By driving at a speed to match the road and weather conditions, looking well ahead and recognising hazards in good time you should be able to aviod the problem experienced by Michelle. You can read more on the story at BBC news.
